Stereotypes

Quick, how many stereotypes can you name in 30 seconds? Probably a lot right? Now, how many people can you think of that disprove a stereotype? Right. Kinda makes you wonder just how stereotypes get started and why anyone is willing to believe them.  I can't tell you how many times I've heard someone say things like "All <insert race here> people are <insert stereotype here>. Really? You've personally met and assessed every person of that race and determined this?

Sure, there are some stereotypes that are pretty harmless, but there are a lot more that aren't. Stereotypes can be very mean as can the people who believe them. If you have ever been judged or berated based on a stereotype, you know that it can hurt. You know that it can be embarassing.

The thing about stereotypes is that there's one to cover just about everyone. For every race, religion, hair color, type of home, job, musical interest, whatever, there's a stereotype to go along. Let's look at me for example. If you look at me you'd see a 20 something white chick with an in between hair color that some say is brown and some say is blonde, and the mother of three. Just from that, what stereotypes come to mind? Go ahead and leave me a comment andI'll tell you if you're right.
